Leixlip, County Kildare

LeixlipLeixlipLeixlipLeixlipLeixlip
Located on the confluence of River Liffey and Rye water, Leixlip is the youngest urban village of County Kildare, Ireland. Noted as a pretty village in Porter's directory in the year 1910, the town derived its name from Old Norse for Salmon Leap. Year after year, the River Liffey frequently yields the first salmon in every new fishing season.

Leixlip witnessed the Battle of Confey in 917 A.D, with the Irish winning the battle over Vikings in 1014 A.D. Along with leaving behind their legacy of fight, trade and craftsmanship, they also gifted the place its name, "Lax Hlaup". The history of the town is silently depicted by the Leixlip Castle, which has been home to some of the prominent names in the history of Ireland. Built on the rock above the confluence of river Rye and Liffey, this medieval castle was built by Adam de Hereford in 1172. The castle served as home to Henry's son and brother of Richard the Lionheart, John in 1185 when he was a prince.

The castle passed on from Strongbow's followers to crown and further to Rt. Hon William Connolly. Connolly’s legacy and fortune gifted the town with finest house of Palladian architecture and an attractive Barn. Home to generations of Connolly family until 1914, the castle was bought by Honourable Desmond Guinness in 1958 and stayed here since then. The gothic greenhouse, the temple seat, the gazebo and the gate lodge that are found in the grounds of the castle are highlights of this castle.
